Wither Tracing Chart
This is the way to measure your horses withers to identify how wide the Gullet should be in your saddle. Saddle gullets should vary depending upon the width of your horses spine. The shoulders and ribs are a whole nother story. The chart below shows how to measure for gullet width only. Most Paso Finos have narrow withers and can handle a narrow gulleted saddle such as a narrow Kuda and a standard Yancey. Where we get into trouble is when we think that all bars should fit all horses. The bars are the problem in saddle fit most of the time. Gullet width is most important when fitting a saddle that has soft bars. This way the pommel will sit properly on either side of the wither and not down on the shoulder. Many people automatically think that a pinched wither is from a pommel gullet that is too narrow when in reality it is from bars that do not fit the angle of your horses shoulders and ribs properly. The Chart below was developed for the Kuda Leather Flex Saddle, but you can use it to find out how wide Your horse is in the wither too. It won't tell you anything about what bar angle to get, although the rule of thumb seems to be the wider the wither, the flatter the bar.
